Research Interests
Dr. Pieraut’s research focuses on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms that drive neural plasticity, particularly how neurons adapt and fine-tune their connections in response to experience. Neural circuits are constantly shaped by this plasticity, which is essential for brain development, learning, and memory throughout life. Disruptions in these processes can lead to circuit dysfunction, contributing to a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

A key focus of Dr. Pieraut’s work is on inhibitory neurons, which play a critical role in regulating brain activity and maintaining circuit balance. By using advanced techniques such as mouse genetics, viral gene delivery, optogenetics, and in-vivo calcium imaging, the lab investigates how these inhibitory cells form and remodel synapses. The overarching goal is to identify the molecular pathways that are crucial for adaptive plasticity and understand how their dysfunction may lead to neurodevelopmental diseases.

Teaching Interests
Dr. Pieraut is focused on making neuroscience accessible and engaging for students, connecting foundational knowledge with current research. His teaching encourages critical thinking, helping students understand the mechanisms behind brain function and behavior. Through lectures and discussions, Dr. Pieraut aims to give students a solid understanding of neuroscience while building the skills needed to tackle complex questions in the field. The goal is to prepare students for successful careers in neuroscience or other STEM fields, or for anyone eager to better understand how the brain works in both health and disease.
